Heat didn’t bother me often. A benefit of having control over fire, I supposed. My body temperature was naturally higher than most. But after five hours in a glass room full of plants with sprinklers running and a wood burner going in the corner, the humidity got the best of me. I was dripping sweat and growing a bit lightheaded.

Forcing the rickety screen door open with my hip, I basked in the cool wind as it wafted over my sweaty cheeks. I lowered myself to the metal bench in the garden, enjoying the chill that bled through the fabric of my jeans.

I took a moment to glance around.

Before it got too cold to work outside, I’d finished clearing out all the dead branches and brush. I’d gotten some of the perennials to take root. The rose bushes should be lovely in the summer, the baby’s breath that surrounded them would be just as beautiful, and I was in awe of the dicentras. They were the only warm weather flowers that had made it through the frost that’d come last week. I wasn’t surprised that most of the ones I’d planted had withered, of course, but I was excited to see what they’d look like in the spring.

Although the autumn garden was soon to die as well, I was in love with what still remained. The snapdragons, marigolds, pansies, and sweet alyssum meshed beautifully. It was like gazing over a rainbow. Although, I adored the saffron. Ezra had been overjoyed when he saw it, saying it’d save him hundreds of dollars. Apparently, the follicles that erected from the center of the flower were also used as a spice in cooking, and an expensive spice at that.

My absolute favorite in the fall garden were the blue mistflowers. They were like little balls of lilac fluff protruding from verdant green stems. Gorgeous as they were, the reason I liked them so much was because they reminded me of home. These were a bit different than the ones that grew in the Deep North on the Fae Realm—ours lasted through the coldest of temperatures. All winter long, we still had those pretty little puffs of purple and blue and pink. Here, they’d die out soon enough, but I did wonder if the two were related. Perhaps the ones back home had evolved somehow.

Once I’d cooled down a bit, I stood and walked to the rear of the solarium where I’d planted the autumn squashes. The pumpkins were ready to be picked, but I didn’t have my trimmers on me. I made a mental note to come back and collect them before the day was over.

It seemed a bit arbitrary as I gazed over the lot of squashes. All the fruits would feed a few families at least. I wondered what the owner wanted done with them. They were more than just autumn décor—

The back door slammed.

I jolted.

Feet pattered down the stone stairs.

A thump, followed by a groan.

I jogged that way, squinting.

Rain was on the landing, struggling onto her knees, breathing heavily.
